In this study, a self-assembled polydopamine (PDA) microgel was rationally designed by using polyethylene glycol (PEG) and octaarginine (Arg8) as a co-gelator. The PEG and Arg8 were initially dissociated to PEG-NH2 and Arg8-NH2, which reacted in aqueous solution to form Arg8-PEG-PDA and PDA-Arg8-PEG microgels. The self-assembly behavior of these two microgels was studied systematically by the methods of circular dichroism (CD) spectra, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The PEG-NH2 and Arg8-NH2 formed PDA microgel via Michael addition reaction in alkaline conditions, which gave larger microgel spheres. In contrast, Arg8-PEG-PDA and PDA-Arg8-PEG microgels were formed in acidic conditions, as a result of the coordination between Arg8-NH2 and PDA-PEG-COOH. PEG and Arg8 were clearly identified in the microgels through FT-IR spectra. The wettability of the microgels' surface was changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic after the covalent binding of PDA-Arg8-PEG to Arg8. The advantage of this microgel was demonstrated for the cell attachment and proliferation.Q: Avoiding integer division rounding? I'm still learning programming, and I'm not sure if be359ba680
